Don’t be fooled by their small stature: small pickups have made a big comeback in the auto industry, and they are aimed at taking a large part of the market with truck buyers. How is that so? Well, despite being physically smaller and more compact than their much larger stable-mates, compact pickups are every bit as practical and can work just as hard. No, a full-size pickup isn’t always the answer, so you might want to take a closer look at these “condensed” pickups, most notably the new 2016 GMC Canyon.

Return of a Classic

It was a good day a few years back when GMC announced the return of the Canyon, and that essentially refueled a love for compact pickups that was always there, but was left on the sidelines for a few years. Well, the GMC Canyon is back, and back with a vengeance. And while the Canyon may be small in size, it is not at all in features, capabilities or design. The 2016 GMC Canyon is equipped to take on the very best in the segment, and come out on top. The all-new ruggedly masculine exterior makes a serious statement on the road or off the beaten path

Currently, there are four Canyon models to choose from: SL, Canyon, SLE, and SLT. All four models have (as standard) a 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. There’s also an available 3.6L V6 good for 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The 3.6L is optional on all Canyon models (except for the SL). Bonus: There’s a 6-speed manual transmission available on the Canyon SL. If you’d rather not shift your own gears, there’s a 6-speed automatic matched to your engine choice. There is also a standard 2-speed transfer case with electronic control (available on all but the SL).

For 2016, the most interesting update is that for the first time in a small pickup truck, the Canyon can be ordered equipped with an all-new Duramax 2.8L I-4 turbo diesel engine with 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque (only SLE and SLT models).

On- and off-road, the Canyon Delivers

You don’t have to keep your 2016 GMC Canyon on paved roads only, as there’s an available all-terrain package. This package includes Z71 off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, a transfer case shield (4WD only), hill-decent control, and an auto-locking differential (2WD).

Of course, the allure of the pickup (and one of the main reasons one buys a truck) is the bed. The 2016 GMC Canyon has some stellar cab/bed combinations to choose from. The 2016 GMC Canyon is available with a 5’2” or 6’2” Crew Cab box. There is also an available Extended Cab that features a 6’2” box. Crew Cab offers available seating for five, and that changes to space for four with the Extended Cab.
